A Ritmo Lab Production

A bus that connects us to culture and belonging

Community Film and Arts Project

Overflowing with Latin music, dance and visual art, this award-winning short film tells the story of a young Latina, newly arrived to the big city, who is feeling very alone. Desperately wanting to belong, she begins searching for others of Latino heritage. One day, she learns about La Guagua 47 (the 47 bus) and embarks on a journey that changes her life. On the iconic 47 bus, she finds the heart of the Latino community, a place that radiates a sense of tradition, culture, and belonging. For this young Latina migrant, the 47 bus became the portal that brought her home.

The project shines a light on the presence and significance of the Latino community in Philadelphia, and highlights the role of public transportation, portrayed in the film as a magical bus that connects people and communities. The film is produced by Alba Martinez, also the song’s composer; the film director is Pedro Escarcega; lead visual artist is Cesar Viveros, the Choreographer is Christina Castro-Tauser, and the Associate Producers and Creative Consultants are Martin Alfaro and Alaitz Arigoitia. Ashley Rivera is the protagonist, Julieta Zavala is the lead fashion designer, and Leo Gruber is the singer.

‘La Guagua 47’ is a one-of-a-kind community cultural production that engaged over 1,000 Philadelphia artists and community members in the process of bringing it to life.  It is a monument of love and art about Philadelphia’s Latino community,  the immigrant experience, and belonging.
